Crude paraffin is a product obtained from the initial separation in the petroleum refining process and is not deeply purified. It belongs to a mixture of saturated straight-chain alkanes (main carbon chain lengths C20-C35) and is the raw material basis for semi-refined and fully refined paraffin.
Physical Properties
• Appearance and Texture: The color is dark amber to brown, and some high-impurity products have a slight black tint; at room temperature, it is a solid, with a rough and dull surface, a slightly sticky touch, a granular or waxy crystalline fracture surface, and a lower brittleness than refined paraffin.
• Melting Point Range: the melting point fluctuates greatly (the same batch may differ by 5-8°C), there is no fixed precise melting point, and it softens gradually rather than melting instantly.
• Oil Content: The high-oil characteristic is the core marker, the oil content is usually 5% - 10% (some un-deoiled products can reach above 12%), and the "oil seepage" phenomenon occurs - after long-term storage at room temperature, a light brown oil film will precipitate on the surface.
• Odor and Solubility: It has a distinct petroleum odor (volatile smell of hydrocarbon compounds), the odor intensifies with temperature increase; it is insoluble in water, easily soluble in diesel, kerosene, toluene and other organic solvents, and can be mixed with mineral oil, lubricating oil and other oily substances in any proportion.
One of the most widely and cheapest raw materials that have been exploited in the candle manufacturing sector is the crude paraffin wax which is particularly applicable in the manufacture of bulk civil candles, lighting candles and decorative candles.
